I'm a woman in my early thirties living in North Carolina, USA, and I have a lot of varied interests; I love creative writing, music composition, web design, surfing the Internet, thinking out loud, and gaming. And yes, my glasses are crooked. :)

“Swan Lake” Dressup Games

swanlakedressup
Today, I’ll profile one of my old favorite dressup games, which is no longer online but deserves a shoutout nonetheless.

“Swan Lake Dressup” was made by PuterDolls, and became an instant favorite when I discovered it on the Internet way back in 2005-2006. Offering graceful, pretty, well-drawn ballet-style clothes in a range of colors, plus pretty hair accessories, Swan Lake Dressup is a game I wish I could play again.

Basic Gameplay

You could click and drag the clothes you wanted onto the virtual Odette, even changing the basic white leotard. Other hairstyles and hair accessories were accessible by clicking the range of little headshot pictures up at the top of the page.

You could pretty much create any look you wanted–check out my small sample of looks, below:

Some Example Looks

  • Pale blue leotard
  • Long white tutu
  • White tights
  • Pale blue slippers

  • Pink leotard
  • No slippers

  • Brown leotard
  • Short white tutu
  • Sheer tights
  • Dark brown slippers

  • Long blue dress
  • Pale blue slippers
  • Delicate headband

Similar Games to Try

Though this game may be gone, you can try these:

Both these games have been personally tested and at least give some of the same graceful ballet feel. πŸ™‚

Reader Question: Do You Know What Happened to PuterDolls?

In trying to find Swan Lake Dressup, I found that a Blogger website using the name “PuterDolls” was being run as of 2012, but it didn’t seem to be associated with actual game-making–more just game advertising. (Thus, why I didn’t link it here.) Nothing much came up otherwise, not even many pages into a Google search.

Do you know what became of this game website and where its awesome creators might be posting creative work on the Internet these days? If you do, please tell me in the comments! πŸ™‚

Don’t Think God Won’t!

dontthinkgodwont
Hosea 12:9
I have been the LORD your God ever since you came out of Egypt; I will make you live in tents again, as in the days of your appointed festivals.

God speaks through Hosea (one of the Minor Prophets) in the verses before this one, outlining the major flaw in Israel’s national thinking: the Israelites think they don’t need Him anymore. But here, God reminds them sharply that no matter how much power they’ve invested in other things, HE is still in control.

Israel During the Time of Hosea

Wealth and other gods have replaced God in importance in Israel at the time of Hosea’s writing, and no Israelite thinks to turn aside from this course, which is proving destructive and near-catastrophic to the social and political systems (not to mention the spiritual system!). Things are falling apart faster than the Israelites can put them back together; during this time, 4 kings of the Northern Kingdom were assassinated by their eventual successors, and Assyria (east of Israel) was beginning to dissect the land, leading to the total dissolution of the Northern Kingdom within a short time.

God’s Reasoning

In other parts of the Book of Hosea, God explains why He is allowing this to happen. God is not disowning His people permanently; rather, this is akin to a divine spanking. Israel has been unfaithful and blasphemous, following false gods and forgetting the name of God. God, as the divine parent, realizes that this is a self-destructive course for His people. Thus, He must try to turn Israel’s thinking through prophets (like Hosea).

Much like today’s parents struggle to help their children when they become addicted to substances, God wanted Israel to become whole and healthy again and drop its addiction to other gods. But it had to have a wake-up call first, a true “divine intervention;” Israel had to see that it had sinned as a nation when it turned aside from God.

God will never force His way into our lives, but He will use even the Satan-caused tragedies in our lives to teach us how much we need Him, turning sorrow to a good end by showing us how much He wants us to rely on Him and how much He longs for us to return to Him. God speaks in this book as a brokenhearted parent, reminiscing about Israel before its addiction to other gods, childlike and faithful; He longs for that time to return, and knows that it can, but only when Israel’s mindset changes.

The Occasional Hard Lesson

Sometimes, God has to remind us just Who’s in charge, especially when we start thinking we control all of what happens in our lives. When we rely on power, money, social esteem, or even our own “good judgment” to determine our life’s course, we almost inevitably turn away from what God wills. Sometimes, we are as willful as the ancient nation of Israel, and we forget that God does not hesitate to use discipline against us, even if He uses Satan’s chaos as a disciplinary tool. Satan simply looks to turn our lives into chaotic messes; God uses those messes to teach us that we need Him. (I certainly saw this in my failed teaching career–Satan surely had me by the back of the neck, shaking me around, and God was right there, showing me that if I was to be free of that depression and pain, I had to trust God again. I did so, and the depression has been evaporating from my life ever since.)

Don’t think God won’t use whatever He has to use to get through to you. He wants to be reconciled with you, wants to be in your life, wants to be your Heavenly Father. And trust me, it is a much easier road when He is allowed to be that!

My Favorite Beauty Products

myfavebeautyproducts
Though most of my blog posts don’t trumpet my femininity to the heavens, I definitely am a girl–and so, I figured I’d indulge myself in naming some of my all-time favorite beauty products, partially inspired by Jenny’s post about her drugstore beauty haul. (By the way, this post is not sponsored by any company!)

See what products have pleased this incredibly picky girl, below!

Face Products

St. Ives Invigorating Apricot Scrub
niveasoft
Nivea Soft
vaselineliptherapy
Vaseline Cocoa Butter Lip Therapy

Urban Decay Naked2 Eyeshadow Palette
instantcheekbones
Covergirl Instant Cheekbones Contouring Blush in Refined Rose
medieval
Lipstick Queen Lipstick in Medieval
jeanqueen
Lipstick Queen Lipstick in Jean Queen

With my fair, sensitive yet oily skin, and my desire for a simple makeup routine, I focus more on better skincare and a couple of enhancing makeup products rather than caking on skin-colored makeup. I’ve used St. Ives scrub weekly for years, and Nivea Soft moisturizer is an excellent follow-up to it. (Other than these two products, however, I only use water on my face during the rest of the week–my face breaks out and gets angrily dry if I try to wash it too often.)

The Lipstick Queen lipsticks are the best-pigmented, least-sticky lipsticks I’ve ever used, period (Medieval, especially). I love Medieval’s soft red color–it’s red without being crazily dramatic, while Jean Queen is the perfect pinky-nude color. Plus, Vaseline’s Cocoa Butter Lip Therapy helps my peeling lips (possibly caused by a vitamin B deficiency) during the night. Combine the two and I have radiant, soft, boyfriend-approved lips ALL DAY. Meanwhile, CoverGirl’s Instant Cheekbones blush gives my face a soft lift without looking too made-up, and Urban Decay’s lovely range of metallic eyeshadows lend a pretty highlight to the lids of my deep-set eyes.

Hair Products

weeklydeepcleanse
Pantene Damage Detox Weekly Deep Cleanse

Pantene Classic Care 2 in 1
dove-shampoo
Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo
dove-conditioner
Dove Intensive Repair Conditioner

My straight, medium-fine hair and my oily scalp actually combine to give me easy-care hair. I can pretty much wash, comb, and wear in the summer, and wash, comb, dry and wear in the winter (which is all the styling I care to do, LOL). Thus, my hair beauty routine is focused around great shampoos and conditioners rather than “styling” products.

Pantene’s Weekly Deep Cleanse is just about as great as their discontinued Clarifying Shampoo (which I loved <3), and I use it as my first shampoo in the shower to degrease and prepare my hair. Depending on the time I have to get ready, I can then either reach for my 2-in-1 shampoo or my Dove Intensive Repair Shampoo and Conditioner. Both have wonderful light fragrances and leave my hair looking and feeling like silk, which both my boyfriend and I love.

Body Products

dovesoap
Dove Original Beauty Bar
veneziarosesoap
Venezia Soapworks Rose Soap

Venus Original Razor

Venus Breeze Razor With Shave Gel

Since I’m phasing out shower gels and body washes in favor of cheaper moisturizing bar soaps, I’ve listed my two favorite bar soaps here. Dove’s original white soap has been a go-to product since my childhood, and Venezia Soapworks’ rose soap is a new favorite with the potential for the richest lather I’ve ever seen a bar soap make. As a time-saver, I use my Venus Breeze razor in the shower–I don’t have to buy separate shave cream, AND it’s one fewer thing I have to carry when traveling. My original Venus razor serves alongside a simple bottle of conditioner for longer shave sessions or for touch-ups.

Summary

My pared-down beauty routine may look too simple to some, but these are the products I have personally tested and found to be AMAZING. I have no brand loyalties, and like I said at the beginning of the post, nobody’s paying me to say any of this–I just love these products!

Hits Don’t Really Matter

hitsdontreallymatter

Uh oh! Unpopular opinion alert! I just said website hits don’t really matter!

Even though I get tons of spammy emails and comments telling me I need to “backlink” and “up my Google ranking” (which sounds uncomfortable and/or rude, LOL), I actually will dare to say that the sheer NUMBER of hits our sites get doesn’t matter.

Why? Well, there are a couple of major reasons:

#1: A Five-Second “Visit” is Not a Visit

Web statistics record every visit, even if somebody’s just on your site for a few seconds; this doesn’t mean that anybody’s actually staying around to really SEE your site and get meaning out of it. In fact, most quick visits are Web crawlers/robots anyway!

Instead of focusing on the number of hits, look at how long each visitor stays on your site(s). Long visits mean that someone out there is ENJOYING your content–which is what all us webdesigners want!

#2: No Comments and No Repeat Visitors is a Bad Sign

If you get a few longer-duration hits, but none from the same IP address, it can mean that people are visiting your site and finding no reason to come back. Likewise, if you’ve got no repeat commenters, your site is interesting, but not interesting enough to warrant a second comment.

Instead, look for the number of times an IP address pops up in your site statistics per month. If IPs show up more than once, you know you’ve got someone’s attention out there. Also, people who come back to comment a second or even third time are likely engaged with your content and are enjoying it.

How to Get Meaningful Visits and Keep People Returning

  • Don’t just post your link on random sites that have nothing to do with your content. Advertising in this spammy, selfish way will make people think your site is full of spam, too!
  • Affiliate or link-exchange with sites that are similar to yours, so that you drive traffic to each other’s sites.
  • Another great way to advertise: get active in forums and online communities that are relevant to your topic, and mention your site as something others in the community would like to visit.
  • Keep making content, and keep your site updated. Fresh content gives your visitors something to keep coming back for–update at least once a week and post the newest content prominently on your front page. (Plus, a layout/design update every six months to a year is a good idea!)

Summary

Don’t just chase after a certain number of “hits” to your website–instead, seek out meaningful connections with your users, and you’ll find your website being visited a lot more often. After all, numbers don’t mean everything in this business!

Soul Notes

soulnotes
Since I was a child, I’ve often “heard” musical pitches whenever I meet someone. It’s not a actual sound, but a tone resounding between my ears–a strange “mental hearing.”

This probably sounds pretty wacky to people who don’t experience this. I mean, how can somebody “hear” something that’s just in their heads? But for me, these pitches are not just random occurrences; they are clues to that person’s personality, and perhaps even their soul. I call them “soul notes.”

Detecting Soul Notes

My perfect pitch likely helps a lot in this, but it seems to be an automatic, possibly instinctive process to pick up on someone else’s soul note.

For instance, when I met my boyfriend for the first time, I heard, clearly and distinctly within my head, a high B, as if played controlled and soft on a stringed and bowed instrument. This matches his quiet mien, his way of carrying himself, but it also matches how he approaches life–with utmost self-control and logic. The key of B is gentle and subtle, but definitively “there.”

By contrast, when I hang out with one of our mutual friends, a very boisterous (and funny) person, the brassy trumpet-like sound of an F is in my ears, at a barely-conscious level, the whole time. F is a key of celebration to me, a key of joy–but also a key of solidity and strength. While our friend may be a little loud and wild at times, he is also a steadfast buddy and a family man at heart.

As for my own soul note? Well, it’s been quite a bit harder to hear than others’, but I believe my soul note to be C-sharp (aka D-flat). It is a very deep, “original”-sounding tone, almost foundational, and it can both fade into the background as well as sound itself loud.

Soul Notes as Predictors of How I Get Along With Others

It’s funny how the harmony or dissonance of these perceived notes seems to predict how another person and I will get along together. My boyfriend’s soul note and mine are a major-second interval apart (B and C-sharp)–they could strike against each other in disharmony, and yet when played together, they form a shimmering duet of each not overpowering the other.

Our boisterous mutual friend, on the other hand, reacts with my boyfriend differently than me. B and F pull against each other a bit more, creating the framework of a B-diminished chord; C-sharp and F are a major-third interval apart, more harmonic. It’s weird; I sometimes understand our mutual buddy better, understanding possibly why he gets mad or frustrated, while my boyfriend can be puzzled by his reactions to situations.

Usually, other people’s soul notes interact with mine on first meeting, and then get stronger as I continue to be around them. A person I met a few months ago had an indisputable A-flat (G-sharp) soul note, which sounded harmoniously but hollowly with my C-sharp. Being a fifth apart, it had the potential to either be a major chord or a minor chord, to either have a happy sound or a sad sound. This interaction mirrored how we got along–we were usually in accord, but there always was a little tension, as if we were both waiting for the other person to disagree.

How I Use These Notes

Initially, I use these notes as another clue to the person, doing my best to harmonize with them not only verbally, but subconsciously. As I get to know people, however, I’ve also been able to write and perform piano music that “represents” people in my life, writing how I “hear” their note (and eventually a melody) in my mind. (Most famously, I wrote a representative song for my boyfriend, about a month and a half before he became my boyfriend… πŸ˜‰ )

I write and play these songs because they are great ways to honor friends and family. It’s not always a love song, but simply a “This is what you sound like to me” song.

Summary

Most people are either amused or weirded out when I tell them of this ability, because it is so unusual–I’ve never heard of anybody being able to do this, or of others even being aware of musical tones in their heads. It’s not like I’m hearing voices or anything, but it is a very cool phenomenon. I like to think of it as just one of the ways God is making my life unique and fun. πŸ™‚

Empowerment Buffs, or “those buffs made from salvage”

empowermentbuffs
In City of Heroes, we focus a lot on Enhancements (most comparable to “gear” for World of Warcraft players)–they are permanent boosts to a hero’s selected powers. You can boost the healing potential of your hero, their damage potential, how accurately they hit, and many other facets of their powers. We also pay a lot of attention to Inspirations–temporary, ubiquitous boosts that can be activated during battle to help you get through tight spots.

We don’t, however, pay a lot of attention to Empowerment buffs–but they are important, too!

What ARE Empowerment Buffs?

You might be thinking, “Empower-what?” Well, you can think of Empowerment Buffs as something like the Mystic Fortune buff from the Magic Pack–it’s a long-lasting buff (1 hour), much longer than an Inspiration or an ally buff, but not quite as permanent as an Enhancement. What is least known about them is how they are triggered, and it actually takes a Supergroup base to get them.

How to Get Empowerment Buffs

To receive an Empowerment Buff, you must first have access to an Empowerment Station, which is generally part of a Supergroup Base. If you’re in a Supergroup that has an Empowerment Station, you only need certain pieces of salvage to trigger the stations.

Empowerment Stations look like this (all following pictures from ParagonWiki):

Arcane Empowerment Stations

From left: Enchanting Crucible (Tier 1), Arcane Crucible (Tier 2), Mystic Crucible (Tier 3)

Tech Empowerment Stations

From left: Radiation Emulator (Tier 1), Linear Accelerator (Tier 2), Supercollider (Tier 3)

It doesn’t really matter which type (Arcane or Tech) you go with–it’s mostly a cosmetic difference to match the theme of your base. What matters is that these stations, when activated with invention salvage of varying types, can give you buffs to your resistance to damage, your attack speed, and tons of other cool effects.

Example: Endurance Drain Resistance Buff for Fighting Malta Sappers

For instance, to fight Malta (and the resident Sappers who eat your Endurance when they shoot you), you’ll definitely need the Endurance Drain Resistance bonus–just feed a Hydraulic Piston into the Empowerment Station! You might not think this helps, but it surely does–I’ve been able to make it through a whole Malta battle without having to Rest or eat Catch a Breaths like Bon Bons.

Make Sure Your Empowerment Station Is Fully Upgraded!

There are three levels of Empowerment Stations–Tier 1, 2, and 3, as I noted in the pictures above–and the Tier 3 station will give you access to all the buffs you’ll ever need. However, to be able to build a Tier 3 station, your Supergroup needs a LOT of prestige. Also, you’ll have to buy and build the other two levels of Empowerment Stations first; Tier 1 stations are used to craft Tier 2 stations, and Tier 2 stations are used to craft Tier 3 stations.

When you upgrade stations, you still have access to the previous level’s buffs, so it’s worth it to upgrade when you can.

Find out more about Empowerment Stations (and how to craft them for your Supergroup Base) here: Empowerment Base Items.

What Kind of Salvage Makes Empowerment Buffs?

Salvage of all different level ranges can make Empowerment Buffs–it just depends on what buff you’re after and what level you are. Most of the required salvage for Empowerment Buffs is common salvage, but some buffs require uncommon salvage. Also, some buffs only need one piece of salvage, some need two, and some need three.

A complete table of Empowerment Buffs and the salvage it takes to create them can be found here: Empowerment Buff Recipes and Ingredients. Depending on whether you have an Arcane or Tech Empowerment Station, the salvage recipes will vary slightly for most of the buffs.

It’s a good idea to keep a stash of common and uncommon Invention Salvage in your Supergroup Base (or on your individual characters) that matches up with your characters’ needs. For instance, if your Scrapper keeps getting knocked back all the time, making it impossible to fight, you might benefit from the Knockback Protection Empowerment Buff. Therefore, you might want to carry the salvage that the buff requires (see the list here).

Summary

Using Empowerment Buffs might require a little time investment, but if it helps you get through mission arcs full of maddening enemy attacks, it could reduce frustration by 17.5%! πŸ˜›

When God Speaks Straight To You

whengodspeaksstraighttoyou
Acts 26:15-18
15 β€œThen I asked, β€˜Who are you, Lord?’

β€œ β€˜I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied. 16 β€˜Now get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen and will see of me. 17 I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them 18 to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

This is Paul’s retelling of what happened to him on the road to Damascus, when Jesus appeared to him and his life was changed forever. Before that fateful trip, he had been Saul, a Pharisee who went around collecting and persecuting Christians; afterwards, he was Paul, an inspired missionary and witness for Christ who planted many churches and spoke to many people of what had happened to him.

In these verses, Paul is retelling his conversion story to King Agrippa, after many days of court trials and hearings, to prove his case of Christianity to the king. His conversion tale, however, is but a small thread of his larger defense: that he is still of sound mind, and that he firmly believes what he is saying. He wouldn’t consciously choose to speak blasphemy, because he had once been the arm of the law as far as persecuting blasphemers was concerned. Now he believes that what he has witnessed proves Christianity is not blasphemy.

A Personal, Modern-Day Example

This kind of story seems to belong only in the Bible–certainly, people don’t hear God speaking to them anymore (at least not sane people). Because of this mindset, some people have passed this story off as a metaphorical device, an oratorical embellishment, perhaps. I beg to differ.

When God Spoke Straight to Me

I was at home, convalescing after my disastrous 8-month service as a middle-school teacher, regaining the physical and mental strength I had lost during those trying months. Not the least of my troubles was my consuming depression, which literally left me unable to do anything except what absolutely had to be done; in the last days of my teaching career, I had fought to get out of bed, fought to stay on my feet for 7 hours, fought to regain control of classroom discipline. I had almost no motivation to do much of anything except to be with the people who loved me best–my parents, my boyfriend, his parents, and my friends at church and in the community.

Though I felt buoyed by my supportive net of people around me, I still was at a loss as to what to do with my life. Since teaching was gone, cut away like some diseased gangrenous flesh from the rest of me, what was I going to become? What was I “going to do when I grew up,” whenever that might be? This terrible indecision about my future, which I had never experienced before, was maddening and depressing in the same moment.

I spent a lot of time on my laptop in bed in those days–though we had no wireless internet at home, I had plenty of things I wanted to work on. But it seemed I had no energy to do much writing or thinking, either. That is, until I opened a file I hadn’t touched in almost a year.

It had been just a dribble of a story, about 30 pages worth of aimless thinking about a role-play character I had developed in the days when I still thought positively about my future. It seemed much too hopeful for me now. And yet, as I read over it, I felt a strange tug in my chest; as I reached the end of the story, where the train of thought ended abruptly, I had a thought which did not feel like mine: “Continue the story.”

I resisted this idea. Continue this terrible, piddling story, born of a mind trying to escape its confines of schoolwork and career prep? Bah. It was too much to do, and I was tired. I wanted to sleep, not write.

Then came the thought again. “Continue…the story.” Much firmer and clearer this time, and it brooked no argument. Sighing, I began to type a few sentences. Then, reading over what I had just written, I fixed a few words, and wrote a few more sentences to explain what was going on.

This pattern continued not just for the rest of that day, but for the next few weeks, and then a month afterward, and even several months afterward. I continued the story, expanding and editing, and as I wrote the story, my life began to resume a more normal course. I had something to do again, something to work for again, though I wasn’t quite sure what it was becoming.

What Resulted

As regular readers of my blog might have guessed, what I am speaking of is the beginnings of my first novel, which is now well over 150,000 words. That command, to “continue my story,” was the impetus for me to push the accelerator on my life and move it forward, however tentative and inching its progress.

Looking back, I do believe God spoke to me to encourage me in launching a new creative project–after all, He had made me and knew that my true joys lay in nurturing new ideas to life. Maybe my story is not quite the conversion tale that Paul’s story is, but based on this experience, I don’t think God’s lost his touch for reaching out to His children when they need Him!

Empathy–and Lack of It

empathylackofit
To me, it seems like people just don’t care much about each other anymore. American culture in particular is full of examples:

Empathy-Free Television

Take television. We are apparently supposed to laugh at people getting hurt or embarrassed on TV all the time–certainly, there are reality TV shows which brutally depict how much we all lack empathy for each other.

I have a hard time even watching parts of “America’s Funniest Home Videos”–when there’s a clip of an innocent person being harmed by a prank or accident, I turn the channel. Forget about watching shows like “Wipeout” and “Most Extreme Elimination,” where the whole “name of the game” is watching people get hurt and knocked off stuff while attempting daring stunts, usually for money. I just can’t laugh at that.

Celebrities: Apparently Not Worth Our Empathy

But it’s not just the lack of empathy for physical pain. We expect celebrities of all types (political celebrities as well as singers, actors, etc.) to be perfect beings in all things. They are supposed to leave their houses looking absolutely fabulous, or they’re front-page news in the tabloids–“Is So-And-So Gaining Weight?” or “So-And-So–Too Thin?” Not to mention the “Best and Worst-Dressed Lists,” or the “Focus on Beach Bodies” types of articles in magazines.

And God help the celebrity who has an actual problem or who has made a mistake, either with addictions, family life, or some other area of their personal life. Somehow, they are supposed to be more than human because they’re famous, and every time a flaw of theirs is exposed, we’re scandalized. We gossip about them as if they are the scum of the earth, talking about them in ways we would never talk about our families and friends.

Family and Friends: Sometimes We Lack Empathy for Them, Too

More often than not, we also expect family and friends to never make a mistake, and have little empathy for them. Aunt So-and-so snubbed us at the last party? Forget going to her house this Christmas! And Cousin So-and-so forgot to send us a birthday card–obviously he doesn’t care enough about us. Sometimes we refuse to show empathy to the humans we claim to be closest to; we forget that they, just like us, are human, and as such, they are going to mess up and be imperfect sometimes. We have no sympathy for screw-ups, even the ones who are related to us by blood.

Politics: The Horrible Line Between “People I Empathize With” and “People I Demonize”

This is quite possibly the largest example of American empathy-less society: the us vs. them mentality in politics. No matter where we fall on the political spectrum, most of us are either focused on building our own party up or tearing the other party down. Talking with our hands over our ears seems to be a common posture in political debates, and listening to the other side is just not an option. Empathy for the “other side of the fence” is almost a dirty phrase; seeing how the “enemy” lives and trying to understand them is folly.

What Is Empathy, Anyway?

We have to get over this and have empathy (not just fake sympathy) for our fellow men and women. Empathy means you imagine what it’s like to be in that person’s place, imagining the hurt they feel, the shame they endure, the life they lead.

One Example

I actually have empathy for Britney Spears; might be hard to believe it, but I do. She hit the fame jackpot at 15 and was thrust into a fantasy life, but that “fantasy” was actually made up of hard work, extremely long performance and rehearsal hours, and thousands of media appearances before the age of 18. Music was her life, and yet in order to do all she did, she had to cut away a large portion of what we consider “normal” life.

I look at her now, a woman only two years older than me, having now been through court battles, childbirths, and numerous family problems, and I try to imagine how life has been for her. I know I could never have put up with the demanding schedule she did at the same age she did. She hasn’t had the benefit of a normal life at all, really–her life dramas have been acted out in front of everyone instead of being endured, dealt with, and put into the past. She, like so many other celebrities who have so publicly had difficulties, is not allowed to grow from and forget her past mistakes.

Forgetting Empathy–Shoving Our Own Humanity Under the Rug

We forget, when we look at celebrities whose lives have crashed and burned, who are trying to put their lives back together after crisis, that they are simply humans who get more pictures taken of them than we do. They are humans, who will make mistakes, grow or shrink in crisis, and become stronger or weaker because of their issues.

We also tend to forget, while we make excuses for our own mistakes by saying “I’m only human,” that other people are also human and make mistakes. That includes our family members, our friends, our significant others, our role models, our politicians, and our favorite celebrities, among many others.

Becoming More Empathetic/Sympathetic

I would love to see a world in which we truly try to understand what others go through. We may never fully understand another person’s life, but at least we can try–we can imagine, and sympathize, and support where we can. I know, I know, this is America and we’re all supposed to be self-sufficient machines who never break down, but sometimes you can end up feeling mighty alone and broken amid all the perfect images passing you by.

If we could understand that every person has struggles and pain, just as we do, and if we could support each other to get through this, we might end up with a healthier world. We also might end up with a bunch of basketcases who never fight for themselves, go to war, or defend their rights–but maybe our motivations should be to defend each other’s rights anyway.

Feed Some RSS to Me

feedsomersstome
Aside from content widgets automatically generated by social media websites, RSS feeds are the easiest way to get content from other websites onto your pages. However, the process can be REALLY esoteric, especially if you’re new to the process of incorporating RSS feeds into your personal designs.

When I first started fiddling around with RSS, I had no idea what I was supposed to do with the RSS link…and then, I found a Web service that handled most of the backend code for me.

The Solution: Feed2JS.org

I literally stumbled across this site while aimlessly browsing StumbleUpon–best random search result ever! Feed2JS.org, or “feed to JavaScript,” turns any RSS feed into a block of JavaScript-ed content that can display on your web page.

To test this, I went to their Build Your Feed page, plugged in the URL of the RSS feed I wanted (the first one I did was Last.fm), and then I was given the chance to consider the following options.

  1. Show or hide info about the feed publisher (the website you’re getting the feed from)
  2. Number of items to show in the feed
  3. Show or hide item descriptions
  4. Show item author (if applicable) or not

An Example of a Built Feed

In the case of my Last.fm RSS feed, I didn’t want a title (because I was going to title it myself with the words “Last Played”). I also didn’t want any descriptions of each song, just the title of the song. I wanted the 10 last played songs to display, and I wanted their info to pop up in a new window so that people didn’t just lose my page.

I also didn’t bother with including the date, time, or author of the post because I felt that would unnecessarily clutter the look of the feed. I wanted it to look as much like a WordPress widget as possible. Lastly, I added the custom CSS class of “lastfm” so that I could style my Last.fm feed just like I wanted it.

So, my Last.fm feed’s Javascript turned out looking something like this in Javascript:

<script language=”JavaScript” src=”http://feed2js.org//feed2js.php?src=http%3A%2F%2Fws.audioscrobbler.com%2F1.0%2Fuser%2F__MYUSERNAME__
%2Frecenttracks.rss&num=10&targ=y&utf=y&css=lastfm”Β  charset=”UTF-8″ type=”text/javascript”></script>

And this is what it ended up looking like on the actual test page:

I added the Last.fm icon and “Last Played” text myself, but the rest of the info is all Javascript-ed in! Neat, huh?

WARNING! Don’t Forget to Style The Feed!

The last thing about Feed2JS feeds? Remember to style them, otherwise they look pretty yucky on the page–just basic Times New Roman size 12 font, and default link colors (oh, the horror!).

Even though I had specified a custom CSS class using the “Build Your Feed” page, I had no luck styling my Last.fm feed with the class. I even went to the Style Your Feed page and read up on how to construct the CSS classes that my feed ostensibly needed, but it didn’t work for me at all. (Not sure if it was a browser issue or user error–somehow, I suspect the latter. LOL)

So, instead, I styled the display and the links by specifying the link styles of the div with the id “lfm” that contained my Last.fm feed, using code like the following:

#lfm {
background-color: #abb461;
color: #FFFFFF;
border-radius: 10px;
padding: 3px;
list-style-type: none;
font-size: 11px;
font-family: “Arial”, sans-serif;
}

#lfm a {
color: #fbfcf3;
}

This worked beautifully (aside from the silly list bullets that won’t go away despite putting “list-style-type: none;” in my code), so I’m not worrying about the custom CSS class unless I have to. The less headaches I encounter while coding, the better. πŸ™‚
